In my last blog (Part 1), I promised you that in Part 2 I would give you the simple answer to weight loss. Well...this is Part 2 so I guess I had better deliver!
So, if you want to lose weight, here is the simple answer:
You must take in less calories each day than you expend each day.
I told you it would not be earth shattering! I'm sorry that no bells, whistles or lavish fireworks displays went off when I said that and I apologize that no college marching bands stomped through your home playing "Viva La Vida".
Now, before you get all disappointed, you must realize that there is no other way to lose weight. This is it! You now have a choice. You may either stop reading this and continue your search elsewhere looking for the spectacular, or you may get serious about your weight loss and continue reading on.
Good choice! So, let's continue...
If you want to lose weight, it is all about the calories. Calories are energy that we store in our bodies that come from the food we eat each day. We expend calories, each day, by the activities we take part in and by the natural process of our body taking care of itself. That's right. Our body burns calories even when we are at rest! So, if we take in less calories then we expend, we will lose weight. Put another way, it is about energy balance:
If we consume less energy than we expend (negative energy balance) we lose weight.
If we consume more energy than we expend (positive energy balance) we gain weight.
If we consume the same amount of energy that we expend (energy balance) then our weight stays the same.
Therefore, to lose weight, you need to put yourself into a negative energy balance. A negative energy balance can be achieved by either eating less or becoming more active or a combination of the two. It is that simple!
So, now you have the simple answer and you don't need me anymore. You want to lose weight? Just eat less and do more!
Oh, wait! You might want to read on a little further. You see, the simple answer will guarantee your weight loss and the simple answer is definitely the basis for all weight loss, but if not done correctly, it can be extremely unhealthy, counter productive and a waste of time. Many fad diets are based on this truth of negative energy balance, but they fail to give you the complete picture. You've heard of (or maybe have experienced) the yo-yo diet phenomenon. This is where you lose a bunch of weight only to put it back on...and possibly more! These fad diets help you lose weight, but they don't set your body up for keeping the weight off. Many of these fad diets also make you feel miserable, achy and hungry all the time. This is totally unnecessary. Losing weight, keeping it off and maintaining optimal health while in the process is based on a negative energy balance but it also takes into consideration many other factors.
Don't worry. I'm not going to leave you hanging! In Part 3, we will take a closer look at more of the factors that are involved in healthy, optimal and permanent weight loss. I will teach you how to lose those unwanted pounds safely and permanently. You have the simple answer. Now let's work on how to implement it. So maybe you do need me!
I'm looking forward to working along side of you and answering any questions you may have about your weight loss. Feel free to use the comment box to let me know what your questions may be.
Living healthy is a lifestyle...so let's get to work on healthy living!
